Former Disney chair Barton Boyd dies

Obituary: Helped open stores outside theme park -- Former chairman of Disney Consumer Products Barton K. Boyd, who was once a buyer of merchandise for Disneyland's Main Street, died of heart failure April 13 in Mesquite, Nev.
He was 68.
Boyd had been president of the consumer products division since 1985 when he was promoted to chairman in 1997.
Under Boyd, the company opened Disney Stores outside of its theme parks, the first in Glendale in 1987. There were more than 600 such outlets around the world within a decade.
Boyd retired in 2000; Disney sold the chain four years later but bought back part of it in 2008.
Boyd was born in Laguna Beach and started working at Disneyland in 1968 at age 25. In 1971 he moved to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and he subsequently held a series of executive retailing posts before returning to Disneyland in 1976 as corporate VP of retail merchandise.
He is survived by six children.
